Empowering Youth Innovation Through Intellectual Property Protection

In the spirit of World Intellectual Property Day April 26, let's pay tribute to Singapore's young innovators who are shaping the future. The creator economy, dominated by millions of content creators worldwide, has witnessed a significant shift with digitalization, leading to an estimated worth of $15 billion for influencer marketing as of 2022.

Many young people in this age group 25-34 years have transformed the marketing landscape by collaborating with global brands through blogging, vlogging, and social media content. The influence market is estimated to be valued at $20.4 billion globally and has witnessed a more than five-fold increase over just under six years.

With digital identities and global brands thriving in the digital space, both content creators and businesses must protect their unique contributions such as original works, designs, inventions, technology, brand names, etc., which are safeguarded through intellectual property IP rights like copyrights, registered designs, patents, trademarks, among others.

Here's why IP protection matters for our young minds:

Protecting Innovation

IP protection is crucial for safeguarding one’s innovations. It provides legal safeguards for original works, designs, inventions, technology, and brand names agnst unauthorized use by others.

Content creators should familiarize themselves with key IP issues arising in the digital space, including emerging platforms like the Metaverse, NFTs, , etc. They must ensure that their creations are protected through appropriate IP rights.

Young Inventors Leading the Way

Innovations such as Vietnam's mobile isolation helmet Nihelm for Covid-19 frontline workers showcase how young inventors globally are contributing to the community’s fight agnst pandemics using IP protection under patents. Their contributions have been recognized, further inspiring young inventors across Asia-Pacific.

Invoking the Power of IP in Youth Innovation

Government agencies, educational institutions, and innovation bodies should continue engaging young people, sharing with them how IP can empower their creative endeavors. This collaborative effort is essential for nurturing future leaders who will innovate for a better future.
